12:30 - 3:25 PM

  1. The preview is calculating
  2. I think that I might add a top hat and a carrot nose for the snow man

  4. Went home to grab my head phones
  5. Flipping through music that I had taken off of freeplaymusic.com
  6. None of them seem appropriate for tis animation
  7. I'm going to see if I can find any others
  8. Found one that I really like that should fit called "La La Lu"
  9. Edited the tree's ornaments making them into spheres
  10. Created a material for the ornaments
  11. Placed them
  12. Applied the material
  13. Added a sky and colored it
  14. I'm having the file render since the preview is taking too long
  15. Found the preview render and it says that it won't play because it is a format that quicktime cannot read
  16. In addition I found that the card render is going straight to my external hard drive and that is the reason that it was taking so long for it to render. I thought that I was rendering them out to the working volume but no.
  17. I changed the render settings so that when I go to render it, it will render to the working volume
  18. Copied all files to external

  2. Opened file
  3. I'm trying to figure out how my teacher did the thing that made it so that the bottom half of the sphere matched up
  4. Watched Blyth go through the process twice
  5. I know that I already have gone through the boolean step and that I just need to do the remaining steps
  6. I don't remember how they go...
  7. Tried going through the process that I remembered
  8. It wasn't working out
  9. I showed Blyth
  10. Tried reducing polygons but it wasn't working
  11. Removed the landscape and replaced it with the default landscape
  12. Blyth did the process for me
  13. I deleted the original landscape and globe/sphere and merged the one that Blyth had done
  14. Moved things around so that they sat on top of the scape
  15. I'm going to have to redo the fly-through since that camera is now flying around in the snow
  16. I changed the color of the base to white
  17. Added a bump to the logo so that it matched the base
  18. Deleted the scape
  19. Kept the cameras (for now)
  20. Copied files to external drive
What needs to be done:
  1. Fly-through
  2. Sound/music/ambience

  4. Got files from Alex imported them into Final Cut
  5. Looked at the interactive design that Alex came up with for the science video line up
  6. Looked into how to change the background of the dna mov in final cut
  7. I found that there is a alpha channel and a color corrector
  8. I tried them both
  9. The alpha channel seemed to work best but there was pixelation involved that I could solve
  10. I went through the rest of the files and corrected what need to be corrected and exported them
  11. All files were organized and copied onto the external drive

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Day 23_Class_Thursday (Nov 17th, 2011)

1:10 - 3:15 PM **Working from Home w/Maya**

  1. Opened up the program
  2. Opened up my blog
  3. The standard screen looks similar to C4D only with a lot more available functions, though it might just be due to the set up that there appears to be more
  4. I typed mudbox into the help menu since Blyth had asked if the student version came with it, I'm going presume that since there was was no information on it that the version of Maya that I got didn't come with it.
  5. The primitives are located in the very top menu bar under Create, from there I was instructed to drag my cursor over the workspace and in doing so I decided the size of the sphere primitive that I had chosen
  6. In order to move around the stage there is a cube at the top right hand corner, you can change the views from there simply by clicking on a particular spot on it
  7. Opened up a tutorial on how to create a character in Maya
  8. I brought in a subdiv primitive sphere like the instructions said but I couldn't find a submenu for modeling so I looked it up in the help and it rendered to results for me so I went back and to the search list for tutorials and found a youtube series of steps to create a female character in Maya.
    1. The internet crapped out and the video is having a hard time loading, I'll reload it and if that doesn't work then I'll bring up the page on my netbook and watch it that way
      1. I don't understand why IT can't do anything about it
    2. The link:
      1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyDBZcSILvc
  9. Okay the internet isn't working on either of my two computers so I'm just going to have to either make a character in c4d for the time being or work on the character over the weekend or sometime that I can get a connection
  10. I don't have much for work to do this weekend I'll figure it out then
  11. I got the video to play on my netbook so I'm going to watch that
  12. I figured out how to switch the viewing mode
  13. Watching part 2 of the video

    Thursday, November 10, 2011

    Day 21_Class_Thursday (Nov 10th, 2011)

    12:30 - 3:20PM

    1. I'm trying to figure out why it is that the null object axis keeps leaving the center point whenever I put in a key frame to a specific position
    2. I deleted the keyframes for each of the individual objects
    3. I've tried setting it manually as well as typing in the coordinates and neither work the axis ALWAYS leaves the center of the objects that it's suppose to be in control of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    4. Blyth came over and copied the snowman object to a new file. Removed all key frames from the object and found that there were floating points. After going through and using the optimize tool on each object, the points stayed. Then the null objects were removed from the equation and everything was grouped. A rotating animation was set up, it worked the axis just had to be corrected and then the animation played as it was suppose to.
    5. In addition to that tags were added to the torso and the scarf in order to animate it, the program more or less froze so I closed it through finder.
    6. I was able to save both files open at the time though
    7. Reopening the file I was working on
    8. Tried going back through the steps listed above for the snowman already in the file but it wasn't working out
    9. So I merged the other Snowman file into this one and deleted it with the lone exception of the detailed head
    10. Snowman fixed Animated the arms and torso reaching down to snowball. I will not animate it going back up but I'll have the arms on the head and have them pull away in order to simulate or rather give it the idea of being picked up and put on.
    11. Although its not done the major problem I had is solved and I'll pick up where I left off on Friday to get it over and done with
    Friday:
    1. Complete animation sequences
    2. Add Montserrat to the base of the globe
    3. Render
    4. Edit in Final Cut

    Day 20_Home_Tuesday (Nov 8th, 2011)

    11:30 - 12:15PM

    1. Opened cardanimated2.c4d file
    2. Played through the turn animation at 300 - 390 and the body does this whole loop around and into place
    3. I changed the axis and played through it again it's still not behaving the way it's suppose to be

    Wednesday, November 9, 2011

    Day 20_Home_Tuesday (Nov 8th, 2011)

    1:15AM

    1. Copied all files that weren't on my External Drive onto it in their assigned folders

    Day 20_Home_Tuesday (Nov 8th, 2011)

    Wednesday Nov 9th, 2011
    10:26PM - 1:09AM

    1. Opened file
    2. Continued altering the landscape with the magnet tool
    3. Glanced at the last blog post
    4. What I need to to is:
      1. Fix the plane (which I'm doing right now),
      2. Simulate/setup the particle emitter
      3. Animate the pick up of snowball
      4. Animate the camera zoom out
    5. I'm having loading issues still which making things take longer to change, it makes me curious as to how it's going to react when I go the render
    6. Okay now its really not responding as I try to use the magnet tool now that I augmented the radius size. I'm going to have to forget about changing the landscape for now and focus on the other things that I need to do
    7. Alright this is getting really annoying I went back to the file from this window and the magnet tool works again!! The absurdity of this is driving me up a wall
    8. Changed the arrangement with the landscape and the globe
    9. Repositioned the tree and the snowman
    10. Completed the animated segment for the roll
    11. Sized and placed the stick arms
    12. I keyframed the arms and then they disappeared
    13. I looked around for them found them then moved them back into the globe
    14. I've found a pattern that I better not be jinxing in saying it but it seems that whenever I have a problem the moment that I blog about it the problem solves itself (for the most part)
    15. Put the stick arms back in place
    16. Set the keyframes for them
    17. Rotated the body and the stick arms 90 degrees towards the camera from 300 - 390 frames
    18. Saved
    19. Renamed file to CardAnimation2.c4d
    20. Added joints to the stick arms
    21. Added IK chains
    22. Tested the joints and they work
    23. Put in a camera for the next shot
    24. Went to animate the shot and the body disappeared when I key framed it
    25. I rendered the image and found that the entire body has moved to the top of the globe
    26. I went through and played the key frames, although I had key framed them so that they would stay in position they moved!!!!!!
    27. I do have a previously saved version of this but I getting really pissed off and tempted beyond belief to leave it until tomorrow which would be detrimental to me
    28. I hit the undo function numerous times until I got the snowman's body back where it's suppose to be
    29. I'm done with this. I got the stuff back that I was missing but they are not in the right orientation and toying the the redo and undo functions aren't getting the work that I had back. The other file that I have is from before I put joints in the arms and did things.
    30. No animation has been completed tonight, it was just a giant waste of my time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tuesday, November 8, 2011

    5. Set up animation
    6. Ended up animating camera in order to get up to 300 frames
    7. Moved the snowman
    8. I'm trying to alter the plane but I'm having loading problems. I believe that it's due to the number of polygons
    9. Saw one way to do cloth animation
    10. Corrected alterations to plane
    11. Was shown another way of animation cloth pertaining to a scarf
    What was completed Today:
    1. The set up

    Tuesday, Nov 8th, 2011
    12:34 - 12:50 PM

    **Note:
I'm behind on what I wanted to have done for today: the set up, and the animation. According to my original schedule all that I would need to be doing this week was rendering and doing the final edits. Unfortunately I'm a week behind schedule, I still have to finish the set up and the animation before I can go into post production. Thankfully post production should only take me a few hours to complete so a single class period at most, rather than the two classes I had planned will work out just fine.
I will still meet my deadline which is the end of class on Thursday Nov 10th.

    Plans:

    1. Nov 8 = Complete set up
    2. Nov 8 = Animate 3 cams
    3. Nov 10 = Post Production
    4. Nov 10 = Project Complete

    18. C4d in running really slow with the above file I'm sure that it has something to do with the amount of polygons
      1. Whenever I go to render the still image it takes forever to load and its the same when I click elsewhere in order to get out of the render
    19. Arranged the set
    20. Looking at Sound for animation

      1. It didn't give the same results as what had been shown in the end of the tutorial
      2. Here's the link
        1. http://www.jag4d.com/scarf_animation_with_clothilde.html
    14. I didn't bother saving the file but I kept the link just in case I want to go back and do it again for something else since the scarf I'm doing doesn't have to move like cloth
    15. I found a page of tutorials as well, I haven't actually tested any beyond the one mentioned above
      1. http://www.cgtutorials.com/c4/Maxon_Cinema_4D/newest/4
    16. Created another scarf in the same file then named it Scarf_1_1.c4d (Scarf_1_2.c4d Hypernurbs)
      1. Added color
      2. Saved
    17. Scarf = Done
    18. New file
    19. Created snowman
    20. Merged scarf into snowman file called it snowmanfinal.c4d
    21. Opened the file for the set
    22. Added a sphere that encapsulated it
    23. Added material to sphere to see how it would react to the landscape inside of it
    24. Started altering the edges of the landscape in order to make the group fit itself to the sphere
    25. Added a camera to for it to capture the snow ball rolling over the hills when it get animated
    26. Enlarged the scape
    27. Made a boole btw the scape and the glass
    28. Unfortunately because I got the wise idea to apply hypernurbs to the scape then boole it after it already worked I corrupted the file. I can open it and I can work on it but a bunch of distorted windows eventually cover my entire work space and the program slows down
    29. Grabbed a back up file and corrected the problem by eliminating the hypernurbs
      1. And doing so slowly (doing one thing then waiting, do the next thing and wait, etc.)
    30. What has been done today:
      1. Sticks
      2. Snowman
      3. SnowGlobe (Basic shape of it)
    31. What still needs to be made/done:
      1. Art supplies
      2. String of lights
NOTE***: I'm behind by a day of work but I am going to be working on the files again tonight as well as Wednesday and Thursday. I will get caught back up.

    12:30 - 12:45PM

    1. Checking blog for this week's tasks
    12:45 - 2:45 PM
    1. Opened file Helix4_10_6.c4d saved as Helix4_10_11.c4d to folder 10_11
    2. Looked up to see whether or not you can weight something without connecting them
      1. http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/topic/41627-character-rigging-question/
      2. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to do each one individually but that seems to be the case
    3. I tried giving each cylinder a weight which was tedious but now I can't figure out how to get the weighting on them to connect to the weighting on the parent and thus move right along with it without the cylinders disconnecting from the helix strand
    4. So I'm going to let go of trying to unwind the helix it's not going anywhere and its frustrating me more than necessary
    5. I'm just going to do the fly around of the helix and find out what exactly I'm doing with the electrophoresis gel model I built
    6. Set up a target camera
    7. Aligned it on a helix spline that I resized
    8. Moved the center anchor point of the helix in order to have the camera focus on the middle rather than either end
    9. The animation is set to play from frame 0 to 900 (30 seconds)
    10. Frame 0 is 0% and Frame 900 is 100%
    11. Set up an export under the file name FlythroughSpline1.mov (640 x 480)
    12. Waited for the export
    13. Checked it
    14. There were no problems with it (for once)
    15. Filed it into 10_11 > Helix > MOVs
    16. Set up another render
      1. The only change is that it is a cell render
      2. File name FlythroughSpline2.mov
    17. Waited for it to render
    Plans for Home/Outside of Class:
    1. Try a freehand fly through
    2. Animate electrical part of electrophoresis process (applying voltage)
    Plans for Next Class:

    2. Went into file and organized the bars connecting the helix into two groups
      1. RedSide
      2. BlueSide
    3. Double checked
    4. Put in joints
    5. Bound them
    6. But the cylinders won't move when I apply an I-K chain
    7. When I include them in with the joints they still do not respond
    8. So I saved a new file Helix5_10_6.c4d
    9. Connected the cylinders to their helix (red/blue) and weighted them
    10. They react but they do things that are odd
      1. The cylinders will squash and stretch making odd shapes
        1. I'm going to have to go back in and change the weighting on them
      2. I'm down to two colors rather than the slue of them that I had before. If I want it to work so that the cylinders have their own colors then I'm going to have to find out how to get weighting to work on the children of an object
    11. Watched some Maxxon Cinema 4D tips/Methods on Youtube
      1. Found out how to do hair!!!
      2. Checked out a variety of other tips

    Day 7_Home_Thursday (Sept 22, 2011)

    Saturday (September 24th, 2011)

    3:40 - 6:45PM

    1. Checked blog for what I'm suppose to do this weekend
    2. Opened up butterfly.c4d file
    3. I deleted the plane
    4. Put in a Sky object
    5. Activated the color module and set it to a shade of green
    6. Named new mov file render butterflyloop2.mov
    7. Rendered out to folder WK4 on working volume
    8. Saved
    9. Imported butterflyloop2.mov to final cut
    10. Set marker to where I want to drop first animation
    11. I dropped the mushroom file into the timeline in the overhead found that I need to do the same thing that I did with the butterfly file
    12. Opened up the mushroom file
    13. Changed the mov file name
    14. Deleted the plane
    15. Placed a Sky object in and activated the color
    16. Set the color to green
    17. Set my render
    18. Went back to the project file in Final Cut
    19. I opened up the butterflyloop2.mov in the video editor
    20. Moved the image over to the left using the wireframe option
    21. I then dropped it down into the timeline at first it showed up but then I added the chroma keyer and it won't show up on the video screen
    22. I've taken it out and dropped it back in multiple times
    23. I'll try reseting the animation clip to see if that will get it back
    24. It turned out that since I was only moving the wireframe it was messing with the rest of the video so I moved both the wireframe and the image then dropped it in and added the chroma keyer
    25. I set the edging details but I can't quite seem to get the green trim off
    26. Rendered that section of the footage out and tested
    27. I realized that I'm going to need another track for the clips I get back from Chris so I created another one
    28. Moved the clip up to the the top track, track 3
    29. Set up the clip duration to 1;17 it was originally 6;11
    30. Tested again
    31. I realized that the shot isn't stable so I now need to find a way to get the image anchored to that point
    32. Looked it up
    33. Found a link that and watched but it is Final Cut in association with a program called Mocha that is being used. I had finder look for mocha and had no success so the computers don't have the program but the method seems to work well. (Link posted below)
      1. http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Use-Supreme-Tracking---Final-Cut-Pro-161792925
    34. Looking to see if there is tracking in Final Cut
    35. Looked on youtube and found one that was in another language then located this one
      1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1UYwBW1eCw
    36. It looks like something that I should be able to do so I'm going to give it a shot
    37. Imported mushroomloop3.mov
    38. Saved project file
    39. Opened new project file under name of Tracking Test
    40. I went through the video tutorial and found that it isn't very hard to use at all (even when you have a lot of points set up to track with the mask)
    41. But it's not exactly what I'm looking for so I looked for another tracking tutorial
      1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZP6oHsigdI&feature=relmfu
    42. This one is a bit more helpful only I'm not completely sure as to how I'm going to applying it to what I'm working on right at this very moment
    43. Made two more tracks (6 tracks total)
    44. Took clips from the video file h4.mov and dropped them into tracks 5 and 6
    45. Went through the process of the tutorial from number 35 and put it into Final Cut
    46. Then dropped the mushroomloop3.mov file into the timeline on track 4 and applied sped up the animation by 444.19% shortening the length of it down to be equal with that timing of the clip
    47. Then I applied the chroma keyer
    48. That's when I realized that I didn't have the mushroom in the correct spot so I went into the final viewer and selected the options to use the image and wireframe and moved it into the space that I wanted
    49. Tested
    50. The motion tracker for the mask is blurry but I think I can go back and fix it but I'll leave it for now. I have the links in order to look back on if I need them.

    Day 7_Class_Thursday (Sept 22, 2011)

    12:35 - 3:00PM

    1. Checked previous blog for reference as to what I'm finishing up today before I put it into the Final Cut project file
    2. Opened both of the c4d files to work on
    3. I looked back into the butterfly file first and found that the motion was pretty much how I wanted it to play in c4d but then I went and checked on the quicktime video and for whatever reason it isn't functioning the same way so I'll bring it into final cut as is to see if that will fix it
    4. Rigged mushroom character with joints
    5. Had to refresh myself on how to skin and weight it through the help menu
    6. Then corrected his weighting
      1. I'm not sure as to why but there was no shading on the character when I went to correct his weighting so it was a little more difficult to weight right
    7. Animated him so his arms are waving up and down
    8. Rendered him out as a quicktime video file name MushroomLoop2.mov
    9. While it was rendering I went into Final Cut to see how my Butterfly file was doing
    10. When I popped it into Final Cut I realized that it had more than one shade of green due to the auto light the comes up in c4d it looks interesting but it's not what is necessary in order to it put in I just want the image itself so I have to go back and re-render it
    11. The mushroom character's BG should work just fine it's a single color of green with no highlights
    12. Though if I remember correctly the sections where it would be best to put them in are being added to by Chris so I'm going to need his files so that I can cut and paste and not overlap anything that he has done. For now I'll put them in since the scenes that he has are going to be under the track that I have work on
    Work for the weekend
    1. See if there is a form of masking tool inside of Final Cut that can be used in addition to the Chroma Keyer
    2. Reset render for butterfly
    3. Place animations in overlapping track in Final Cut
    4. Put in text
      1. Title
      2. Credits
      3. Additional text in video
    Plans for Monday Night Meet-Up
    1. Place the reworked clips from Chris
    2. Place remaining animations into video
    3. Drop sound into Final Cut

    Day 6_Class_Tuesday (Sept 20, 2011)

    12:30 - 3:00PM

    1. Two of the three butterfly/moths were no longer working when I had them play so I deleted them and animated the color on the object
    2. Put in a plane for a BG and colored it green
    3. Tried making it so that it flutters forward but the morph isn't as strong as I need it to be
    4. I'm thinking that I might just have it stay still and flutter on the table to save me the trouble
    5. Decided to leave it stationary and exported as a quicktime movie to the working volume as Butterfly_9_20_11
    6. Created a mushroom creature from a sphere
    7. Colored in 3d paint
    8. Despite the hypernurbs I put it through the coloring is appearing pixelated
    9. I tried going back and fixing it but it didn't do the trick
    10. Thought about animating it then decided to just put a green BG in and see if I can move it around in final cut
    11. Set up render settings
    12. Rendering
    13. Oh and I had rendered the butterfly earlier
    14. While the mushroom was rendering I looked at the render for the butterfly and it seems to twitch and not do the minimum range of motion that I had set it up to do. I could probably get away with leaving it as is but I already cut out the flying motion and so I would like to get the fluttering wings as it sits as accurate as possible to make up for that fact.
    15. Checked out the render for the mushroom I'm going to go back and remove the edges so that I can get rid of the gridded mesh that shows up on him and in addition to that make it so that he actually moves. The best movement will probably be with his arms.
    At home/outside of class:
    1. Add motion to the arms of the mushroom
    2. Correct the butterfly's wing flutter
    3. Render them both out to check for any further problems
    4. Find a trial version of final cut & download it

      4. Set morphs to one of the butterflies
      5. Animated it
      6. Looked for a way to copy the morph
      7. Figured I would try through the means of applying the morph to children which comes up as an option when you right click on the applied tag
      8. IT WORKED!!!!
      9. I disengaged them from the parent and they retained the morph from the parent
      10. I Then moved them around and started changing their color

    ****NOTE:
I'm going away this weekend (to a steampunk convention) so there is a strong possibility of me not getting to do much if any work this weekend with the lone exception of my character creation homework which involves 50 character drawings due at 3:30 PM on Monday. I'm debating bringing my computer since I found my student disk, and perhaps even download a trial version on final cut (express) or buy it either or at this point.
If I don't do any work by monday I'll try to squeeze something out on Tuesday before class.

Day 2_Class_Tuesday: Meeting on Group Dynamics (Sept 6, 2011)

I was rather surprised by what we went over in our discussion of group dynamics. I was aware of humans being pack animals by nature but despite that there is a lack of communication that always seems to loom overhead no matter how positively or negatively a group functions together.
The part that attracted a lot of my attention was when it came to the approach or avoid theory or the more commonly known fight or flight. Reflecting on my own experiences with people I realized that I tend to avoid conflict more so than rising to the occasion not even when I know I'm right or that I should.
Awareness being a huge thing when it comes to group activities was something that I had never really thought of, but when it's posed as a form of communication or awareness of others then it becomes clear. Individually we all have needs, likes, and dislikes that we have to make aware to the group that they are participating in for a chance at a successful group experience.
I myself wish that I had gone over these details before so that I could have bettered myself for group events, projects and the like. Knowing how to react and treat individual situations better so that there was less struggling, frustration, lack of understanding of roles as well as being able to differentiate values from person to person.
I'll take what was discussed with a grain of salt though, primarily because of the bad experiences that I've had with groups that I've had to take complete control over and do all the work myself to ensure a good grade. In addition I'll work on my own group behavior and use this in my current and and future group projects both in school and otherwise.
